Over 80 new trainees attended the ST1 induction at the Events Centre in Stewart House last week.
Our new starters heard talks from many excellent speakers throughout the day and took part in several workshops.
Highlights of the day included an entertaining talk from Chris Harris, Neonatal SpR at King’s entitled “Basic approach to Neonates” where he gave an insightful, yet amusing, view of working as a neonatal doctor (or a “Peed”). Neal Russell (outgoing St1) gave our new trainees some “tips from the frontline” on how to deal with parents, midwives, toddlers and teenagers. Some very useful advice there!
4 workshops took place aiming to cover areas of concern for our new St1s:
1. Assessment and Management of the Sick Child
2. Paediatric Prescribing
3. Information Technology (or what is ASSET/E-Portfolio?)
4. Learning in the Workplace (aka “yes, there is plenty of opportunity to get 20 SLEs done in a year”)
The event was not only a great opportunity for ST1s to meet trainees in own sectors/hospitals but also for the ST1s across London to get together all as one. This, I know, is something that several are keen to continue and sector trainers are looking at ways of taking this forward……
A big WELCOME to all the new trainees across London, was really nice to get to meet many of you – keep up the enthusiasm!
And finally, a big well done and thanks to Shahid Karim, Paediatric Trainee, who organised the event. I look forward to next year.
