Thanks to all of the College Tutors, deputies, Trust Reps, TPDs and Trainee Committee members in NWL who contributed to such a lively and dynamic Specialty Training Committee (STC) meeting on Tuesday. It was great that we were joined by Danielle Bennett and Iwona Nowak from the Imperial Lead Provider Office, and also by Laura Waddoups from the Shared Services team.
Since we have started these meetings in September 2013 we have had a trainer and trainee from every Trust in NWL with paediatric trainees at each of the meetings, which is a really superb effort with so much going on in each of our departments. We are really grateful for everyone’s efforts with this – please do keep coming or sending a rep.
The meetings have evolved such that the main section of the meeting (3.30pm to 5.00pm) is a chance for us to discuss and develop ideas and innovations to support the training programme, with the last half hour (5.00pm to 5.30pm) an opportunity for College Tutors to meet with the sector’s TPDs to discuss specific training issues within their departments.
This month we picked up on 4 areas that had been discussed in mini-workshops:
- Ongoing work led by Mary Cummins to look at how we might adjust the ST1-3 training programmes so that at least 5 out of the 6 six-month posts were either in NW or NCE London. There was a long discussion about this, with strong recognition that the trainees valued efforts to contain programmes locally but absolutely wanted to retain some flexibility to be able to do specialty posts across London. It was highlighted by trainees and trainers that it was vital for the programme to be balanced in terms of the numbers of neonatal, general paeds and specialty paeds posts within each 3-year rotation. This thinking will be fed back to senior colleagues within the Shared Services and Commissioning teams
- The website updates, and in particular the work to populate the Google Calenders is ongoing, please do contact Amutha and/or Nick (trainee vice chairs) if you have the time and energy to help them to populate it and to make it really user-friendly and worthwhile.
- Regional training across the sector. Affy and Amutha, with the support of Saji Alexander, have launched a new programme http://www.londonpaediatrics.co.uk/509/ of regional teaching, which kicks off this Tuesday (21st January). Affy is looking for volunteers from each NWL Trust to take on the organisation of one of these monthly sessions each year
- Hannah Baynes (Consultant and Educationalist at Hillingdon) has been compiling a guide to ARCPs and WPBAs which will hopefully be ready to be published in the next 2-3 weeks, and shared across the School. Following initial debate in the College Tutors and Trust Reps open session, and built on within the STC meeting, it was decided that rather than launching in to a commitment to have ‘face-to-face’ ARCPs in certain years of training, we would put more of a focus on career development and coaching conversations. Work to launch a careers evening for ST2-3s has commenced.
We will look to pick up on these areas and others in March. Do please get in touch in the meantime if I can help with anything
