If you weren’t able to go – here’s a quick run through about what happened at the ST1-3 Careers Evening which was held at Senate House. There were some great speakers including Hannah Baynes (General Paediatrician at Hillingdon), Camilla Kingdon (Head of School) and Bob Klaber (STC Chair, NWL).
The informal atmosphere meant that it was a brilliant opportunity to ask questions. We were given a useful overview of paediatric training, an insight into general paediatrics, sub-specialty training and information about OOPEs. In particular, it was useful to have more information about ‘grid’ applications and ‘SPIN’ modules.
Some take home messages were that it is important to speak to as many people as possible for career guidance, reflect on your own priorities and values and be proactive in taking opportunities to attend clinics in the sub-specialty that you may be interested in. The general paediatricians explained that as part of their training they both had opportunity to develop other skills/interests in leadership, service improvement and medical education.
Overall it was a very informative and enjoyable evening and I would definitely recommend it to all trainees when there is another one!
Thank you to all the speakers and in particular to the organisers, NWL Vice-Chairs Nick Ware and Amutha Anpananthar
