Many of you will be aware that the RCPCH have updated their guidance about workplace-based assessments (WPBA) or supervised learning events (SLE) with effect from September 2016. I’ve attached the new Table of Assessments for you to see the details about this.
The key message is that the minimum number of 12 WPBAs per annum has been removed. I can hear the shouts of joy …… but please study the Table as you will see that the requirements to undertake a number of WPBAs over each training year remains. For instance, each trainee is required to undertake at least one Safeguarding CBD annually. In addition, there are various other level-specific requirements.
The idea now is that you use the WPBAs in an intelligent way to provide evidence that you are covering the curriculum. For instance, during Level 1 training and as you prepare for the MRCPCH Clinicals, you may wish to undertake plenty of mini-CEX. Later on, as you cover the Level 3 curriculum, you may specifically choose to do several LEADER CBDs and a number of HATs because these will hopefully stretch you and help you develop your readiness to be a consultant.
Please remember to discuss your WPBAs with your Educational Supervisor each time you meet as he/she will have helpful advice for you. Each year at ARCP we will expect to see a good range of WPBAs completed with a comment from your Ed Sup about your progress with them.
If you are concerned about this or want advice, please talk to your Ed Sup and/or College Tutor. The Table of Assessments is very helpful too in spelling out what you need to do.
