With the changeover of placements and appointment of new Trust Reps, we started off the day with a review of the Trust rep roles and duties, reviewing the handbook and the Job Information Guides (JIGs). Making sure we are adequately prepared for the next 6 months we had a refresher session on preparing for the ARCP- aiming for outcome 1’s!
We used the first Trust rep open session to exchange experiences of induction at our new posts, focusing on areas needing improvement and sharing examples of good practice taking place in some of our hospitals. We also discussed on-going issues, devising strategies for improvement. As a result of these discussions we decided it may be useful to develop an Induction checklist for those planning induction to compare their programme to. The aim would be that this covers the key factors and issues that trainees repeatedly report are missing or done well in different places and hopefully leads to a more standardised delivery of high quality and well received inductions.
The second part of the morning was dedicated to exploring the topic of psychology sessions for trainees. Trust reps exchanged experiences on challenging situations in the workplace and the value of psychology debrief sessions. Various resources for trainees struggling to deal with psychological aspects of the job were highlighted, including the well acknowledged service provided by MedNet. This valuable information will be distributed to Trust Reps so do ask them for more information.
Recognising the stress and emotional impact of our daily work we reflected on the importance of taking care of one’s own psychological health. We learnt how to practice “Mindfulness” in a workshop run by Dr Gail Davies, who is co-founder and head of training at the MindLab, and one of the leading practioners of mindfulness in the UK. A simple 5 minute “settling” exercise of focusing one’s attention inwards and on one’s own breath, controlling the wandering of the mind can be all thats needed to reduce our stress levels and be more efficient in our workplace!
We had a highly invigorating morning, and are extremely grateful to the Trust Reps for attending at such short notice and for their Trusts for letting them come. We look forward to welcoming more Trust Reps at the next meeting on Tuesday 9th May.
