A mix of ST1 and ST2 trainees from across London attended the first trailblazers event of the year, aiming to learn a bit more about leadership and management.
The scheme was set up to introduce leadership and management education into Level 1 training, and so far has included sessions on personal professional development, bringing about change in the workplace, and clinical leadership skills for the junior trainee.
This session focused on quality improvement. First there was an excellent talk on quality improvement from Jane Runnacles, with practical tips on how to make sure a project succeeds. Trainees then heard from an ST3 trainee who discussed the excellent QIPs she had been involved in.
The afternoon also included a workshop, in which trainees were given advice on how to develop their ideas for quality improvement, and how they could troubleshoot common issues. Finally, the event finished with a group discussion led by Dr Bob Klaber, who talked encouragingly about where leadership and management can take you, and how it can be developed in a medical career.
Everyone left with new strategies for tackling problems in their hospital, and enjoyed hearing from the interesting speakers. The next session will take place in the Spring 2017.
