We have heard from a number of trainees about their worries in relation to the current proposals for a new Junior Doctor Contract. Many of you have tweeted and written blogs to help highlight the aspects of the proposed new contract that most concerns trainees. This has been very helpful and the School leadership team very much shares these concerns.
The junior doctors in the London School of Paediatrics (LSP) (and throughout England) are the energy and driving force behind many of the initiatives we are most proud of. Your commitment and energy to both your work with children and young people and your development as paediatricians is inspiring. Anything that undermines your morale and the value you bring to children’s services in London has wide significance to how we safely and effectively deliver high quality care now and in the future.
The RCPCH has sent you all an open letter this week expressing their disquiet. Dave James, RCPCH Trainees Committee Chair, is playing a leading role in making sure junior doctor concerns are heard loudly and clearly, not just at the RCPCH but more widely. The Presidents of 8 Medical Royal Colleges have also formally written to Jeremy Hunt expressing their concerns. We would strongly encourage you to engage in discussions and debate about this issue over the coming weeks and months. Some of the ways in which you might want to do this are:
Contact your local MP to explain to them your concerns about the proposed contract;
Attend one of the free events being organized by NHS Employers for junior doctors – the next one in London is on Monday 28 September (https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/d/united-kingdom–london/junior-doctors-regional-meeting/?view=list);
Discuss this with members of the London School of Paediatrics Trainees Committee. Any of your concerns will be discussed at our next meeting on Tuesday 13 October; and
Raise awareness locally with your College Tutors and Trust Reps.
We hope that the situation will become clearer over the next few days and weeks. In the meantime you can contact any of us at contact@nullLondonPaediatrics.co.uk.
